In interviews with Dr. Muhammad, she will be talking with Dr. Jodi Shabazz about fertility and the natural ways to conceive a child, and more.
Please introduce yourself to our audience.
Hi there! Assalaamu Alaikum. My name is Dr. Jodi Shabazz and I am a Naturopathic Doctor who specializes in fertility and reproductive science.
Have you always been interested in Medicine from childhood? If not, what were some of your other interests?
I have always been interested in medicine, but as a child, I leaned more toward becoming a nurse than a doctor, as I always wanted to help people and I have always been very nurturing by nature. Being a Naturopathic Doctor still fits this criteria though, because as a holistic doctor, you get to spend a lot of time with your clients compared to an allopathic medical doctor, which I really like. You treat your client as a person first, and a patient second.
How long have you been working in the fertility area of medicine?
I have been working in the fertility field for the past 10 years, helping women to overcome their fertility issues naturally and conceive their miracle babies naturally.
Do you only work in certain areas of the country or is this a process that can be done remotely?
I work with women from all parts of the world. I use telemedicine in my practice, as well as an online course that teaches women anywhere in the world, as long as they have a device to view it on.
What types of fertility issues do you service and what types do you not service?
Most of my fertility clients are dealing with issues such as blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, c-section scarring, PCOS, and hormonal imbalance. The only type of fertility issues I do not service is tubal blockage from tubal ligation. Unfortunately, this type of blockage can only be repaired with tubal reversal surgery.
Does diet play a part in having a healthy fertility outcome?
A healthy fertility diet is at the very foundation of my fertility protocol. The Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, said it best: “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” Food is medicine. It can heal the body. Conversely, certain types of foods can also be poison for the body. So, when attempting to heal the body, you must first be giving it the fuel that it needs to sustain good health and allow it to focus all of its energy on healing and repairing, rather than focusing on constant detoxification and trying to survive. The body will always put self-survival ahead of reproduction. So, if your body is in a daily fight for survival rather than balance, or homeostasis, your body will put reproduction on the back burner.
What foods or supplements do you recommend for a healthy outcome?
Most fertility issues stem from inflammation in the body. So, this is why a healthy diet is key. An anti-inflammatory diet is best when trying to heal the body. It doesn’t have to be strict, but you have to learn to listen to your body when it’s talking to you. If you eat something and then you notice that you are bloated and belching constantly afterwards, your body is talking to you.
It is saying that it does not like something that you fed it. So, take note of that. It’s not normal to feel bad after eating. You should feel better after eating. It should feel like you are fueling your body, not poisoning it. Eat something healthy, like an apple, for instance, and take note of how it makes you feel afterward. You should feel energetic and truly ‘fed’. Now, you are learning how to feed your body for healing and homeostasis.
We have 3 trademark supplements in our line-up. They are Fallopian Tube Formula I herbal capsules, Fallopian Tube Formula II herbal capsules, and SerraLife Serrapeptase +Plus capsules. Our online course is called the Fallopian Tube Formula Protocol. In the course, you will learn about some other supplements as well that you can purchase from other retailers, and some other powerful healing modalities to use along with taking supplements. Everything in this course helps the body to resolve inflammation, heal scar tissue and blockage, and helps to regain hormonal balance.
Are there things that you should do before coming to see you for help? What are they?
I always recommend that women get a full fertility work-up before coming to see me. This helps immensely to get a baseline and picture of what is going on in the body, as well as helping us to see progress as we go along in the healing process. That said, I can and do work with women who are ‘undiagnosed’.
Are there things that women can do to prevent fertility issues?
Fertility issues can be prevented most of the time. Some of the causes of infertility include an inflammatory diet, too many xenoestrogens in diet/food containers, previous abortions, previous STDs, previous hormonal birth control usage (there’s a syndrome called Post Birth Control Syndrome), and previous IUD usage, etc. So, you see, most of these can be prevented with lifestyle changes and healthy choices.
What is the most common myth or misconception regarding fertility?
The most common myth or misconception regarding fertility is that pregnancy is going to just happen for everyone, whenever they want! Unfortunately, this is just not the case. Conception is a ‘concept’ that only God/Allah is in control of. We can do our part and ‘tie our camels,’ with living a healthy lifestyle and working with our bodies instead of against them and use the tools that Allah gave us with His real food, herbs, and nature in general. And this gives us the best chance of conceiving, with His will and mercy.
Can fertility issues affect your overall physical and mental health? If so How?
Dealing with fertility issues absolutely can affect your overall physical and mental health! Infertility is not for the faint of heart. Women who conceive easily may not be able to fully grasp the trial of infertility. It is heart-wrenching. And the heartbreak continues month after month. The cycle of infertility is hope, guilt, shame, devastation, and loss. And this cycle repeats itself month after month, sometimes for years on end for some couples – a literal emotional rollercoaster.
And to make matters worse, insurance companies do not label infertility as a medical condition, so treatment is often not covered under insurance. Well, I beg to differ – I read a study that said that a diagnosis of infertility is just as devastating as a diagnosis of cancer or heart disease. It is at our very core to reproduce! Women (and men) should seek out support groups when going through infertility. And this is one reason why I created a support group to go along with my treatment and protocol. This is not something one should go through alone.
It seems that many people are waiting to become parents later in life. How much does age affect their ability to conceive?
Age is a very important factor in fertility. There are many things you can put off in life, but having children should not be one of them, in my opinion. Women do have a biological clock, and it’s not waiting for anyone. A decline in the quantity and quality of your eggs with age makes it harder to conceive. I am sorry to be so blunt here, but I like to tell people the truth without sugar-coating, out of love, because it’s what they need to hear – not what they want to hear.
With each passing year of going to university or climbing that career ladder or waiting for the perfect partner (hint – there are none), you are diminishing your chances of conception. My motto is – why not do both? Why not do it all? Why not do it together, as a couple? Go to university. Get that dream career. Marry that wonderful man. And do it together. Grow together, as a married couple and growing family. And extended families should help too. Remember, it takes a village. We have to get back to this. But with fertility, you simply cannot and should not put it off. Just my two cents.
That said, living a healthy lifestyle hugely contributes to your fertility longevity. Many women still conceive well into their 40s. But, unfortunately, this has become rare in our society, being that we are bombarded with toxins and poisons on a regular basis now. Our food, our air, our water, our hygienic products…It seems that nothing is natural anymore. And this plays a huge part in maintaining a healthy body that can support reproduction. Our livers are bogged down and were not created for this kind of abuse. But if you live a healthy lifestyle, your chances of conception later in life are greatly improved.
Can you estimate how many people you have helped to overcome fertility and become parents?
So far to date, I have helped approximately 300 couples to reclaim their fertility and conceive their miracle babies naturally, Alhamdulillah.
Do you evaluate both men and women during a consultation?
To date, I have only evaluated women for infertility. But I plan to start consulting with men as well very soon.
Do you feel that a patient’s physiological health affects their physical ability to get pregnant?
Absolutely. A patient’s physiological health is their baseline for reproduction. If they are generally healthy, with no major issues, their body will more easily allow conception. As mentioned earlier, if your body is in survival mode, due to poor lifestyle choices or other health issues, your body will most always choose self-survival as a priority over conception.
What should patients expect when they first meet with you?
Most of my clients will purchase my online course, the Fallopian Tube Formula Protocol first. This online course teaches them exactly how to follow my protocol. All they have to do is press ‘play’ and sit back and watch and listen as I tell them exactly what to do – what to take, how to take it, how often to take it, etc. For most of my clients, this is sufficient, as this is the protocol for most fertility issues, as the culprit is usually inflammation and/or hormonal imbalance, which the Fallopian Tube Formula Protocol addresses quite well. If after taking the course, they still would like some one-on-one support, we set up a formal consultation where I do a full intake process, and then make personal recommendations to go along with the FTF Protocol.
