So my niece is graduating from college this summer and she called me 6 o’clock in the morning asking me how to reduce stress, lose stress weight, and reduce acne breakouts.
There was sheer panic in her voice.
She is getting ready for graduation pictures, earth-shattering news! Her acne is flaring up and her jeans are too tight.
She wanted a quick fix so that her graduation pictures would be gorgeous. Surprisingly she is not the only one who asks me these kinds of questions. Usually, around May, June, and July I get calls from graduates, brides, and bridesmaids wanting help with there acne and how to shed some weight fast.
Stress, weight gain and acne are a vicious cyclic process. And that process is marching across your body causing havoc on your life and wellbeing. But we have the solution in 5 steps.
Step 1. Start with stress.
Low energy, headaches, and or upset stomach are signs that you are highly stressed. If you can get your stress manageable it will be easier to work on acne and weight gain. You may even find the acne and weight gain starts decreasing on its own.
Step 2. Eliminate all unnecessary activity.
Declutter your mind so you will have more time to relax. Turn off all your electronics and take a walk in your neighborhood or have a cup of tea in the garden. The walk actually helps lower cortisol levels that cause stress symptoms.
Step 3. Add Exercise.
Walking, jogging or push-ups will move major muscle groups to help eliminate cortisol. One to two 20 minute meditation sessions will help lower your heart rate and lower cortisol levels too.
Step 4. Eat slower and savor every bite.
Eliminate sugar, caffeine and processed foods. Have a well-balanced breakfast like slow-burning carbs and lean protein. This will help you maintain balanced sugar levels.
Paying attention to your feelings while you eat will allow you to sense fullness so you will decrease the amount of food that you eat. Eat with friends that you can discuss your feelings with. This is excellent for digestion and gives you an outlet to release tension. All of these tips will you to feel less stressed and help with acne.
Step 5. Wash your face and hands.
Wash your face twice a day with a mild antibacterial soap for your skin type. Keep your hands and cell phone clean and away from your face. Drink lots of water to flush toxins out of the body. But most of all relax with a few deep breathing exercises daily.
Step 6. Mother knows best.
The advice that your mom gave you when you were a child still works so get 8 hours of sleep. Getting a scheduled sleep pattern will provide an agreeable framework that will help you respond to unexpected stressors.
By practicing these five tips along with identifying your stressors early on you will be able to lower your stress, reduce acne breakouts, and lose those extra pounds. For those who may need help with all types of stress, we offer stress management individual and group coaching. In no time you will
